Leeway’s History

Leeway was established in 1974 and was a founding member of WAFE (Women’s Aid Federation England) Our service was set up by a group of women who recognised that there was a need for a refuge in Norwich. This became the third known to open in the country. The service started with a small start up grant from the local authority and was run by volunteers on a collective basis. During the 1980’s and 1990’s the service expanded and developed to meet the needs of the women and children, with the establishment of the After School Club and a Resettlement service.

In 1990 a management committee was established, to steer Leeway and they have the responsibility for the strategic management and direction of the organisation. Operational services are managed by the directors, who have the responsibility for the management and supervision of staff and for the day to day running of projects and budgets etc.

Each of Leeway’s specialist teams are managed by a Team Leader. These are: Refuge Services, Children’s Services, Admin & Finance, Outreach and Floating Support (for women and children), CDRP (Advocacy Services & Data Monitoring) and Great Yarmouth Services. Leeway has a staffing team of approximately 40 employees and additional volunteers who are responsible for the delivery of Leeway’s services.
